Hi again,
I know this has been discussed many many times, and you must be sick and tired of hearing it by now, but I was just wondering if you all knew that your rating system has a serious flaw in it (imho and not only mine). I have always shunned rating, regarding it as something for naps and xp whores who play on easy servers together with beginners. Just thought SL was really a great website for searching servers, etc. not for that rating thing. But recently I just wanted to give it a try, because I was bored… never in my life I wasted more time doing a more useless thing! There are always players with new nicks and uberskill (meaning: lowskill, but on jaymod low is high , and yes, I'm low too.). 600 xp gained, highest fragger, 100 kills, etc. etc. and I get a minus? (I know that it's about xp, I'm not dumb I have read the wiki and all, so plz don't tell me that ,wanted just to emphasize that I didn't play bad ) I get a minus, just because there is a good player with low rating, with only a few hours of rating time, and he makes the same xp I do? Honestly, this makes no sense. But this is beating a dead horse since it's been years that (smart) people have pointed out that in *any* elo-based system *nobody* should start from 0, and blabla and that you shouldn't affect others' rating unless you haven’t played for *enough* rating time, etc. etc. yet nothing ever changed. Pity, because playing for a rating, for someone who doesn't play in any ladders/cups/tournaments, could have been a nice thing to make the game less boring, to have some goal to reach... But seriously, if I should play only in some servers and not in others, and be careful and rename if there is a good newnicker, and, and, and… Nah… I wanna just play in servers I like, and I'm not talking about etpro, ofc. I would be really silly if I wanted to get rating on bio clanserver (which, btw, is an ettv server) or such places, but talking about jaymod? Just a couple of little adjustments to your algorithm would make the system more realistic, without even affecting who is top rated, and so nobody would whine. But again, it's your choice. Your website, your choice. I will just stop playing for rating, every now and then I'll go to some 'nap server' with my etpro nick and 10 rating, or better some new nick, and give some challenge to the 'skilled' players there… what a pity, they will lose points, but not my fault if the system is flawed… Don't get me wrong, I'm not coming to your house and telling what to do, you have done a great job up to now, but why just don't make it a bit better, if it's so easy to do so? regards, and happy new year. |

I can only quote sl.Rippchen over and over again: SL is for fun! If you want a serious competition play league I know, you are perfectly right, but just, for example, make it so that new nicks have a rating of, let's say, 12, instead of 0? That would be (probably) a piece of cake for you to implement, and it would give a big improvement to the 'skillfakers' problem. That way every new nick will have a rating much closer to an average estimate of one's probable skill in xp whoring ;) and since ET is quite old now, with many good players, maybe 12 is even a bit too low as an estimate of the average player. Anyway if one sucks so bad that 12 is too high, he will lose points. I said that just because I thought it would have been easy for you to change a 0 with a 12, or maybe with (rank of the top player/2). If not, then my excuses. Sorry if you have to quote again and again, I understand you, but I hope you agree nonetheless with the logic behind my post, and the reason for which ppl say these things again and again, too. ;) With my post I was just seeking for a polite exchange of views between rational people. If it's broken and easy to fix, why leaving it as it is? Apart from the fun/pro logic of yours. And note that this fix wouldn't change the rating of top players at all, maybe they will be glad of not getting a - in some sessions instead. thanks again for reading. |
