As some of you may be aware YCN has announced that from the 29th of january it will cease hosting servers I just wanted to take this opportunity to ask server admins what providers other than YCN offer the best service and value as it's hard to read between the info you can find on their dedicated websites. So if anyone can give details of server providers they are currently using and the good and bad features it would be very helpful a I am sure there are many of us that were using YCN.
Kindest regards Dogster. -------------------- |

Just an idea:
If the public demand is high enough, we (SL) could rent a powerfull rootserver to host "some" gameserver (also on rental base, since my girlfriend will kill me if I spend another 100 bucks / month for gaming) -------------------- |

Very bad new for wolfenstein community, but, if that can help you Dog, I was using this company http://dediserverhosting.com/ :
- good quality and low prices - the admins are, like all of us, real ET fanatics, and help you for any problem very rapidly - the F|A servers use it, good argument ! Now, I use a VPS, like rehhh says, but you need Linux skills (a friend of mine have). Schnoog, you are too helpfull man xD Think of your IRL before !!! [DIABOLIK]$mart -------------------- |

I'd like to see that happen, Schnoog, I think it's a great idea. I'd just need to know what the details would be and then I could ask our Clan what they thought about the idea . ...............since my girlfriend will kill me if I spend another 100 bucks / month for gaming) -------------------- |

Old but gold, best thing is to get ur hands ona dedicated r00t srv --> hosting shits on yer own* nuff said I couldn't agree more. Only problem with that is that it would cost a bomb for those who haven't got the money for it but even still if they politely ask clan members to support them with that then chances are you wouldn't get as much as you'd expect. Backing Mr G and Schnoog on this, its a great idea :) |

A short info:
A suitable Root-Server would cost about 70 Euro / month + round about 100 Euro setup fee (Intel® Xeon® E3-1270 v3 + 32GB ECC Ram + 2TB HDD [raid1] + 20TB free traffic @ 1Gbit/s [they assure at least 200Mbit / s] , after 20TB the speed will be lowered for the remaining days of the month.) This configuration should be suitable for round about 20 gameserver with 32-64 slots each. -------------------- |

A short info: A suitable Root-Server would cost about 70 Euro / month + round about 100 Euro setup fee......... We'd need a few clans to participate then, in order to get the necessary funds on a regular basis. I sent a text to our DOG, Schnoog, informing him about your idea and he's very keen to see it work. I'll catch up with him tonight on SL teamspeak and we'll discuss things then. Thanks again for your excellent offer . -------------------- |

Some points about my idea...
it`s not my target to start a professional hosting company, so no explicit servicelevel agreement would be implemented. I see this more as a community driven resource and cost sharing. Lets say 10 server with each 32 slots should be possible to take place on a 50Euro/month server. This means less than 0,16 Euro per slot and month, lets round this up to 20ct (setup fee for such a server is 49Euro) I`m not very familar with gameserver provider, but I think those estimated fees are very competitive. -------------------- |

I'm currently with Gameservers and not having an issue with them as of yet despite my server having been hosted there only for 2 days or so.
Now lets take a look at this Dedicated hosting shall we? Looking on their forum now and at their ET package I see nothing mentioned in regards to server slots. Are those root servers they host through Dedicated hosting or servers like the ones you rent at YCN? They aren't very clear about that, a server for 9 quid a month with lack in information seems rather dodgy to me despite the good reviews they are having. If indeed those are cheap root servers they are hosting then we should go with them right? No setup fee? There is a catch in it somewhere. |

my server having been hosted there only for 2 days or so. With 2 days of Gameservers you can say they are good ?? LOL At http://dediserverhosting.com/index.php, you just need to register too see the amount per slot. And I've been using them during 1 year without any problem. And McBeth has a server with plenty players with lag-free at http://dediserverhosting.com/index.php So don't talk about companies you do not know NB: I have no interest with advertising http://dediserverhosting.com/index.php, just tell my consolidated opinion. I look at this in a very simple way:
If anyone wants o host a dedicated server (no mather where) and gets familar using it, its a good choice. If there are enough clans / people that dont want to try that and like the idea schnoog came up with, its also a good choice. The only thing is what do you yourself prefer. If you have a good enough internet connection you also may want to selfhost a gameserver on your own root @home or run multiple gameservers on it. Theres only a choice to make. I see schnoogs offer the same way as he does: as an offer or a service for a community, not a way to start earning money. His offer - if enough people are interested - is 6,40 EUR per month for a 32 slot gameserver. I call that more than just a good one. Even 10 or 12 EUR would be a fine offer. YCN hosts for 0,40 EUR for new customers... -------------------- |

We need 2 or 3 of our servers replaced, so we'll definitely be interested in Schnoog's server hosting. -------------------- |
